Recognizing Grief, Remembering Truth
Come Thou Fount
Robert Robinson and John Wyeth CCLI 20455650
VERSE 1
Come, Thou Fount of ev’ry blessing,
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace;
Streams of mercy, never ceasing,
Call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet,
Sung by flaming tongues above;
Praise the mount—I’m fixed upon it—
Mount of Thy redeeming love.
VERSE 2
Here I raise my Ebenezer;
Hither by Thy help I’m come;
And I hope, by Thy good pleasure,
Safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger,
Wand’ring from the fold of God;
He, to rescue me from danger,
Interposed His precious blood.
VERSE 3
O to grace how great a debtor
Daily I’m constrained to be!
Let thy goodness, like a fetter,
Bind my wand’ring heart to Thee:
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
Prone to leave the God I love;
Here’s my heart, O take and seal it;
Seal it for Thy courts above.
Lord I Need You

VERSE 1
Lord I come, I confess
Bowing here I find my rest
Without You, I fall apart
You're the one that guides my heart
CHORUS:
Lord, I need You, oh I need You
Every hour I need You
My one defense, my righteousness
Oh God, how I need You
VERSE 2
Where sin runs deep, Your grace is more
Where grace is found is where You are
And where You are Lord I am free
Holiness is Christ in me
BRIDGE
So teach my song to rise to You
When temptation comes my way
And when I cannot stand I'll fall on You
Jesus You're my hope and stay
Creed
The Nicene Creed
We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one being with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven:
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary,
and became truly human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father [and the Son],
who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
Scripture Passage
Sermon
“Recognizing Grief, Remembering Truth”
(Lamentations 3)
Psalm 13:1
How long, O LORD? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?”
Psalm 13:6
I will sing to the LORD, because he has dealt bountifully with me.
Psalm 42:5
Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me?
Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.
“… every lament is a prayer. A statement of faith. Lament is the honest cry of a hurting heart wrestling with the paradox of pain and the promise of God’s goodness.” -Mark Vroegop, Dark Clouds, Deep Mercy
Lamentations 3
22 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; 23 they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.
3:18
My endurance has perished; so has my hope from the LORD.
3:58
You have taken up my cause O Lord; you have redeemed my life.
3:1-5
1 I am the man who has seen affliction under the rod of his wrath; 2 he has driven and brought me into darkness without any light; 3surely against me he turns his hand again and again the whole day long. 4 He has made my flesh and my skin waste away; he has broken my bones; 5 he has besieged and enveloped me with bitterness and tribulation . . .
3:55-58
55 “I called on your name, O LORD, from the depths of the pit; 56 you heard my plea, ‘Do not close your ear to my cry for help!’ 57 You came near when I called on you; you said, ‘Do not fear!’ 58 “You have taken up my cause, O Lord; you have redeemed my life.
3:21
But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope:
“We may hear our hearts say, ‘It's hopeless!’ but we should argue back. We should say, ‘Well, that depends what you were hoping in. Was that the right thing to put so much hope in?’ Notice how the psalmist (in Psalm 42) analyzes his own hopes— ‘Why are you so cast down, O my soul?’ Notice that he admonishes himself. ‘Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him.’ The psalmist is talking to his heart telling it to go to God, looking to God.” -Tim Keller, Walking with God Through Pain and Suffering
Lamentations 3:22-24
22 The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; 23 they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. 24 “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.”
Lamentations 3:25-27
25 The LORD is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. 26 It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord. 27 It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth.
Lamentations 3:31-32
31 For the Lord will not cast off forever, 32 but, though he cause grief, he will have compassion according to the abundance of his steadfast love;
Lamentations 3:33
33 for he does not afflict from his heart or grieve the children of men.
Closing Song
Solid Rock
William Bradbury and Edward Mote CCLI 20455650
VERSE 1
My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus' blood and righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
But wholly lean on Jesus' name
VERSE 2
When darkness seems to hide his face
I rest on His unchanging grace
In every high and stormy gale
My anchor holds within the veil
VERSE 3
His oath, His covenant, His blood
Support me in the whelming flood
When all around my soul gives sway
He then is all my Hope and Stay
VERSE 4
When He shall come with trumpet sound
Oh may I then in Him be found
Dressed in His righteousness alone
Faultless to stand before the throne
CHORUS
On Christ the solid rock I stand
All other ground is sinking sand
All other ground is sinking sand
BRIDGE
All my hope is in you
All my strength is in you
All my peace is in you
All my life is in you
