Opening Songs

It Is Well
Phillip Paul Bliss, David Horton, Rodney J. Mills, Horatio Gates CCLI 20455650

VERSE 1

When peace, like a river,  attendeth my way
When sorrows like sea billows roll
Whatever my lot, You have taught me to say
It is well, it is well, with my soul

VERSE 2

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come
Let this blessed assurance control
That Christ has regarded my helpless estate
And has shed His own blood for my soul

VERSE 3

My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought
My sin, not in part but the whole
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul

VERSE 4

And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll
The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend
Even so, it is well with my soul

CHORUS

It is well
(It is well)
With my soul
(With my soul)

It is well
It is well, with my soul

Greatest Is Thy Faithfulness

Thomas Obediah Chisholm CCLI 20455650

VERSE 1

Great is Thy faithfulness,
O God, my Father
There is no shadow
of turning with Thee

Thou changest not;
Thy compassions, they fail not,
As Thou hast been
Thou forever shall be

VERSE 2

Summer and winter,
springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon, and stars
in their courses above,

Join with all nature
in manifold witness,
To Thy great faithfulness,
mercy and love

VERSE 3

Pardon for sin and
a peace that endureth,
Thine own dear presence
to cheer and to guide

Strength for today
and bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine,
with ten thousand beside

CHORUS

Great is Thy faithfulness
Great is Thy faithfulness
Morning by morning
new mercies I see

All I have needed
Thy hand hath provided
Great is Thy faithfulness,
Lord, unto me

Creed

Responsive Reading: Psalm 51:1-6, 10-13, 15-17

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions.

Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin!

For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me.

Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment.

Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.

Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart...

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence,

and take not your Holy Spirit from me.

Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.

Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you…

O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise.

For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it; you will not be pleased with a burnt offering.

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

Scripture Passage

Nehemiah 1:1–11

God Rebuilds
(Nehemiah 1)

Main Idea: God is always rebuilding.

1. God is faithful.

“Everything you do is connected to who you are as a person and, in turn, creates the person you are becoming. Everything you do affects those you love. All of life is covenant. Imbedded in the idea of prayer is a richly textured view of the world where all of life is organized around invisible bonds or covenants that knit us together. Instead of a fixed world, we live in our Father's world, a world built for divine relationships between people.” (Paul E Miller, A Praying Life: Connecting with God in a Distracting World)

2. God works through people.

“Even though Nehemiah acknowledges the grace of God in the success of this enterprise, it is clear that his own personality was a determining factor in its accomplishment.” (Nupanga Weanzana, Africa Bible Commentary)

“Grit depends on a different kind of hope. It rests on the expectation that our own efforts can improve our future. ‘I have a feeling tomorrow will be better’ is different from ‘I resolve to make tomorrow better.’” (Angela Duckworth, Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance)

Closing Song

Jesus Is Better
Aaron Ivey and Brett Land CCLI 20455650

VERSE 1

There is no other
So sure and steady
My hope is held in your hand

When castles crumble
And breath is fleeting
Upon this rock I will stand
Upon this rock I will stand

CHORUS

Glory, glory, we have no other king
But Jesus lord of all
We raise the anthem
Our loudest praises ring
We crown him lord of all

VERSE 2

Your kindly rule has
Shattered and broken
The curse of sin's tyranny

My life is hidden
Beneath heaven's shadow
Your crimson flood covers me
Your crimson flood covers me

BRIDGE 1

In all my sorrows
Jesus is better,
Make my heart believe

In every victory
Jesus is better,
Make my heart believe

BRIDGE 2

Than any comfort
Jesus is better,
Make my heart believe

More than all riches
Jesus is better,
Make my heart believe

BRIDGE 3

Our souls declaring
Jesus is better,
Make my heart believe

Our song eternal
Jesus is better,
Make my heart believe
